What Is LinkedIn Boolean Search?

LinkedIn Boolean search is a method of combining keywords using three logical operators — AND, OR, and NOT — to build precise search queries that filter profiles by exact criteria. AND requires all terms to match; OR includes any; NOT excludes unwanted results. Paste the generated string into LinkedIn's search bar, Sales Navigator, or Recruiter Lite to narrow millions of profiles to a targeted shortlist in seconds.

AND Narrows results — both terms must appear SaaS AND Paris
OR Broadens results — either term can appear "VP Sales" OR "Head of Sales"
NOT Excludes results — removes matching profiles NOT intern NOT student

Boolean Search vs. Regular LinkedIn Search

Feature Regular Search Boolean Search
Result precision Broad, algorithm-driven Exact, logic-driven
Title synonyms Often missed Covered via OR groups
Exclude unwanted profiles Not possible Built-in with NOT
Works on free LinkedIn
Works in Sales Navigator ✓ (keyword field)

Boolean search works on LinkedIn's free tier, Sales Navigator, and Recruiter Lite. The operators are the same across all three — the difference is which additional filters you can combine with them.

How the LinkedIn Boolean Search Generator Works

Combine keywords using AND, OR, and NOT to build precise queries that surface the exact profiles you're looking for.

1 Job Titles

Add your target job titles

Enter the titles you're targeting (CRO, Chief Revenue Officer, VP Sales). The generator automatically groups them with OR and wraps each in quotes for exact matching.

2 Include

Add mandatory keywords

Enter the terms that must appear in the profile (SaaS, Fintech, Paris). These are combined with AND so only profiles matching all your criteria appear.

3 Exclude

Exclude irrelevant profiles

Add keywords to filter out noise (intern, student, consultant). The generator applies NOT logic so you never waste time on off-target results.

Pro tip: After building your search, make your own profile recruiter-ready too. Our AI LinkedIn checker gives you an instant score and a prioritized fix list.

Boolean Search on Free LinkedIn, Sales Navigator & Recruiter Lite

The same AND, OR, NOT operators work across all three — but where you enter them and what you can combine them with differs significantly.

Free LinkedIn

LinkedIn Free & Premium

Paste your Boolean string into the main search bar at the top of LinkedIn. Works on all account types with no paid subscription required.

  • Enter string in the top search bar → press Enter
  • Filter results by People, then use sidebar filters (location, connections)
  • Results capped at ~1,000 profiles per search
  • No company headcount or seniority filter available
  • Best for: individual prospecting, light sourcing
Sales Navigator

LinkedIn Sales Navigator

Paste your Boolean string into the Keywords field (not the top bar). Then stack Sales Navigator's exclusive filters on top.

  • Keywords field → paste Boolean string → Run search
  • Layer: seniority level, company headcount, industry, geography
  • Use "Changed jobs in past 90 days" to target warm prospects
  • Access up to 2,500 results per search
  • Save searches with alerts for new matching profiles
  • Best for: outbound sales, account-based prospecting
Recruiter Lite

LinkedIn Recruiter Lite

Enter your Boolean string in the Keywords field on the search page. Recruiter Lite adds talent-specific filters not available in free search.

  • Keywords field supports the same AND / OR / NOT operators
  • Combine with: years of experience, school, skills, open to work
  • Use NOT to exclude current employees of your company
  • InMail credits let you contact outside your network
  • Save candidate pipelines per role or project
  • Best for: technical recruiting, sourcing passive candidates

Key difference: On free LinkedIn the Boolean string goes in the main search bar. On Sales Navigator and Recruiter Lite it goes in the Keywords field — if you paste it in the wrong field, operators are treated as plain text and results will be wrong.

Advanced LinkedIn Boolean Search Tips

Get sharper results by combining Boolean strings with LinkedIn's built-in filters.

Combine Boolean with Sales Navigator filters

Paste your Boolean string into the Keywords field, then layer in seniority level, company headcount, and industry. Boolean handles titles; filters handle firmographics.

Common mistakes to avoid

Always quote multi-word titles ("Head of Sales"). Group OR alternatives in parentheses. Keep operators in UPPERCASE (AND, OR, NOT). Avoid overly long strings — LinkedIn truncates past ~1,000 characters.

Split long queries into multiple searches

Targeting multiple industries or seniority levels? Break them into separate, focused searches. Shorter strings are more reliable and easier to iterate on.

Cover synonyms and title variations

Job titles vary by company and region. "VP of Sales" vs "VP Sales" vs "Sales VP" — add all variants to your OR group. This alone can triple your results for niche roles.

Everything you need to know about LinkedIn Boolean search.

Is this LinkedIn Boolean Search Generator free?

Yes, completely free. No sign-up required. Enter your keywords, click Generate, and copy your Boolean string directly into LinkedIn's search bar.

What Boolean operators does LinkedIn support?

LinkedIn supports AND, OR, and NOT (all must be uppercase). AND narrows results, OR broadens them, and NOT excludes terms. Use parentheses to group terms and quotation marks to match exact phrases.

How long can a Boolean search string be on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn limits search queries to roughly 1,000 characters. If your string is longer, split it into multiple focused searches. Shorter queries also tend to return more accurate results.

Do I need Sales Navigator to use Boolean search?

No. Boolean operators work on LinkedIn's free search. Sales Navigator and Recruiter Lite give you more filters to combine with Boolean — but the operators themselves work on any account type.

What's the difference between Boolean search and regular LinkedIn search?

Regular LinkedIn search matches keywords loosely and relies on LinkedIn's algorithm. Boolean search gives you explicit control — you define which terms must appear, which are optional, and which disqualify a result. The output is a far more targeted list.

Why is my LinkedIn Boolean search not working?

The four most common causes:

1. Lowercase operators. and, or, not in lowercase are treated as regular search words, not operators. Use AND, OR, NOT in all-caps.

2. Missing quotation marks around multi-word phrases. Head of Sales without quotes matches any profile containing "Head", "of", or "Sales" — far too broad. "Head of Sales" matches the exact phrase.

3. Wrong field on Sales Navigator. Pasting into the top search bar instead of the Keywords field treats your Boolean string as a name search. Always use the Keywords field in Sales Navigator or Recruiter Lite.

4. String too long. LinkedIn silently truncates strings over ~1,000 characters, dropping the end of your query — often the NOT exclusions. If results look too broad, split into two shorter searches.

Can I use Boolean search in LinkedIn Sales Navigator?

Yes. Paste your Boolean string into the Keywords field (not the top bar) when running a Sales Navigator search. The same AND, OR, NOT operators apply. The advantage over free LinkedIn is that you can then layer Sales Navigator's exclusive filters — company headcount, seniority level, industry, "changed jobs in past 90 days" — on top of your Boolean string for much tighter targeting.
