Tailor Your Resume to Any Job Description
To tailor your resume to a job description, ApplyMate takes the resume you already have and the ad you are applying to, then rewrites the summary, bullets and skills around what that posting asks for. You get the tailored resume and a matching cover letter, usually in under a minute. It works only from your own record, so a gap in your experience stays a gap.
Tailor your resume to the job ad you have open.
Does tailoring matter? Huntr's Q1 2026 report on 39,184 tailored resumes found interviews on 4.23% of applications with a tailored resume against 2.07% without one. That is the vendor's own data and correlational, so treat it as a direction, not a promise.
How it works in 3 steps
- Upload your resume. A PDF or Word file. It is read once and becomes the record every rewrite is checked against.
- Paste the job ad. Add the job title and the full description. Not sure what the ad stresses? Run it through the free keyword finder first to extract the keywords.
- Get the tailored resume and cover letter. Review the result, then download the PDF and the cover letter written for the same job.
What changes on your resume
Tailoring is mostly ordering and vocabulary. The work stays yours; the resume leads with the part the ad cares about and uses the ad's own term for it. Two illustrative examples follow, written for this page, not taken from a customer.
Software engineer
Job ad excerptBackend engineer. Build and run Python services in production, take part in on-call, mentor new developers. PostgreSQL required.
Software engineer with experience across web and backend development.
- Built internal dashboards in React for the support team.
- Wrote and maintained REST services for order processing in Python.
- Took part in the on-call rotation for the order services.
- Helped onboard two new developers.
React, Python, PostgreSQL, Docker
Backend-leaning software engineer who builds and runs Python services in production, including on-call, and mentors new developers.
- Built and maintained REST services for order processing in Python.
- Took part in the on-call rotation, running the order services in production.
- Mentored two new developers through onboarding.
- Built internal dashboards in React for the support team.
Python, PostgreSQL, Docker, React
The Python, on-call and onboarding lines moved up and the React dashboards moved down. "Helped onboard" became "mentored", the ad's word for the same work. Nothing new was added: no number, tool or employer appears that was not in the left-hand resume.
Finance and SAP
Job ad excerptSAP finance analyst. Own month-end close in SAP, perform intercompany reconciliations, support the external audit.
Accountant with experience in monthly reporting.
- Produced the monthly management report for the finance director.
- Prepared monthly closing entries and account reconciliations in SAP.
- Reconciled balances between group companies each month.
- Answered document requests from the auditors.
Financial accountant who runs month-end close in SAP, performs intercompany reconciliations and supports the external audit.
- Ran month-end close in SAP: prepared closing entries and account reconciliations.
- Performed intercompany reconciliations between group companies each month.
- Supported the external audit by answering the auditors' document requests.
- Produced the monthly management report for the finance director.
Same four lines, reordered so the close and the reconciliations come first, each in the ad's phrasing ("month-end close", "intercompany", "external audit"). If the ad also asked for a system you have never used, it would stay off the resume.
What it will never invent
A tailored resume is only worth sending if every line is true. These are the guarantees the code makes, and the one it does not.
- A skill your record never shows is removed after the rewrite. Your own skills list is kept if too few would be left.
- A language your resume does not name is removed.
- A date the source never gives is deleted rather than guessed.
- A role the rewrite dropped is put back, and so is a line carrying a metric that went missing.
- A contact detail that is not in your document, such as a phone number or a LinkedIn address, is removed.
- A file that reads as a different person's resume is refused instead of rewritten.
- Numbers: the instructions tell the model to use only figures your resume states, never an estimate or a range. That is an instruction, not a checker, so read every figure before you send.
ApplyMate, doing it by hand, or ChatGPT
All three work. By hand gives you full control and takes the most time; the step-by-step guide to tailoring a resume covers that method. ChatGPT can do the rewrite well if you check every line it returns.
| By hand | ChatGPT or another chatbot | ApplyMate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Your time | Free tier, or a plan you may already pay for | One-time credits from $9.99 |
| Your work | Read the ad, rewrite each section, format the file | Paste both documents, write the prompt, fix the layout | Upload, paste, review |
| Staying true to your record | Entirely yours | Down to your prompt and your reading | Checks after the rewrite, listed above |
| Cover letter | Write it separately | A second prompt | Written with each resume |
| Best for | One dream job and plenty of time | A careful reader who already pays for it | Many applications, files ready to send |

Pricing
Credits are a one-time payment, with no subscription. One credit covers one tailored resume and its cover letter, and unused credits do not expire. Prices are plus VAT where it applies.
- 10 credits: $9.99
- 30 credits: $19.99
- Unlimited for 3 months: $29.99, up to 20 resumes a day, never renews
The first resume is written before you pay. You see a preview that fades out toward the bottom, with a count of how many of the posting's key terms it now matches. Paying unlocks the PDF and the cover letter. A run that fails on our side does not cost a credit.

Frequently asked questions
How do I tailor my resume to a job description with ApplyMate?
Upload your resume as a PDF or Word file, paste the job ad, and ApplyMate rewrites your summary, bullets and skills against that posting. You get the tailored resume and a matching cover letter, usually in under a minute. Your own resume stays the only source: the rewrite reorders and rewords what it already says.
Can ChatGPT tailor my resume to a job description?
Yes, if you paste in both documents and check every line it returns. The risk is a skill or a number you never wrote slipping in, and nothing checks a general chatbot's answer against your resume unless you do. A dedicated tool is faster once you are sending many applications: it also formats the file and writes the cover letter.
Will it make up experience or numbers?
It is built not to. The instructions tell the model to use only figures your resume states, and after generation a check removes skills and languages your record never shows, deletes dates it cannot find in your document and puts back a role or a metric line the rewrite dropped. No check catches every added number, so read the figures before you send.
How much does it cost, and is it a subscription?
It is not a subscription. Credits are a one-time payment: 10 for $9.99 or 30 for $19.99, and one credit covers one tailored resume plus its cover letter. Unused credits do not expire. There is also an unlimited pass for 3 months at $29.99, up to 20 resumes a day, that does not renew.
What do I get before I pay?
Your first resume is written before you pay, and you see a preview of it with a count of how many of the posting's key terms it now matches. Paying unlocks the PDF and the cover letter written for that job. If a run fails on our side it does not cost a credit.
How is this different from an ATS resume checker or a keyword finder?
A checker scores your resume and a keyword finder lists the terms in a job ad; both leave the rewriting to you. ApplyMate does the rewrite. Many people run the free keyword finder or checker first to see what a posting wants, then tailor.
